چکیده

Field and laboratory observations have shown that a relatively low beach groundwater table enhances beach accretion. These observations have led to the beach dewatering technique (artificially lowering the beach water table) for combating beach erosion. Here we present a process-based numerical model that simulates the interacting wave motion on the beach, coastal groundwater flow, swash sediment transport and beach profile changes. Results of model simulations demonstrate that the model replicates accretionary effects of a low beach water table on beach profile changes and has the potential to become a tool for assessing the effectiveness of beach dewatering systems.  2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. Journal of Coastal Research, 26(6), 1096–1103. West Palm Beach (Florida), ISSN 0749-0208. Swash overtopping and sediment overwash on a truncated beach

New experimental laboratory data are presented on swash overtopping and sediment overwash on a truncated beach, approximating the conditions at the crest of a beach berm or inter-tidal ridge-runnel. The experiments provide a measure of the uprush sediment transport rate in the swash zone that is unaffected by the difficulties inherent in deploying instrumentation or sediment trapping techniques...

Transport of horseshoe crab eggs by waves and swash on an estuarine beach: Implications for foraging shorebirds

The abundance of horseshoe crab eggs in the swash zone and remaining on the beach after tide levels fall was evaluated to identify how numbers of eggs available to shorebirds differ with fluctuations in spawning numbers of horseshoe crabs, wave energies and beach elevation changes. Field data were gathered 1e6 June 2004 at Slaughter Beach on the west side of Delaware Bay, USA. Counts of spawnin...

Impacts of wave and tidal forcing on 3D nearshore processes on natural beaches. Part II: Sediment transport

This is the second of two papers on the 3D numerical modeling of nearshore hydroand morphodynamics. In Part I, the focus was on surf and swash zone hydrodynamics in the cross-shore and longshore directions. Here, we consider nearshore processes with an emphasis on the effects of oceanic forcing and beach characteristics on sediment transport in the crossand longshore directions, as well as on f...

Sandbar Migration Due to Cross-Shore Sediment Transport; A Case Study of Noshahr Coasts, Iran

Cross-shore sediment transport is one of the effective factors in erosion and sedimentation, and affects dynamics of the beach profile in coastal areas. Furthermore, sandbar migration due to cross-shore sediment transport mostly effects beach nourishment, displacement of pollutions trapped in sediments, and organism and plants’ lives.  In this manuscript, sandbar migration due to cro...
